An Introduction to Cord Magick
By Christiana Gaudet
I learned to practice magick within a particular religious tradition. Over the years it has become clear to me that magick can work independently of religion or within the framework of any particular religious belief. In this article I will share some basic information about cord magick. That is, ways of using cord, string, ribbon and thread in magickal work. I will omit any particular religious overtones. You may create sacred space, invoke Higher Power and say prayers in whatever way suits you. Feel free to adapt these ideas to your own practices and traditions.
Magick with fiber and textiles is virtually universal. Creating sacred garments to wear, embroidering sacred symbols, making “mojo bags” or medicine pouches are all common ways of using textiles for magickal purposes. The very process of creating cloth is easily done with magickal intent. The rhythm of weaving or knitting is hypnotic and meditative – perfect for attaining the alpha state where magick happens. Stitching, sewing and embroidering create a similar effect.
Cord magick is simpler than weaving on a loom or sewing magickal garments, but much of the theory is the same. Cord magick incorporates itself well with many types of magick. Cord magick can utilize color magick in the choice of the color of the cord. Cord magick can utilize number magick in the choice of the length of the cord or the number of knots tied. Cord magick can be used in conjunction with textile magick in creating pouches. Cord magick can be used in conjunction with candle magick by tying a thread or ribbon around a candle or using a candle to cut the cord.
