Darn-I-Wish-I-Had waved at his peer
Who had done so much for himself in the past year.
And as Gee drove away, Darn felt pretty bad
And he said, with a sigh, “Darn I wish I had!”
Gee looked at his girl and the new snazzy car
Much happier than he was last year by far.
And he knew in his heart he was not the same kid
And said with a smile, “Gee I’m glad I did!”
(Part Two - Rags to Riches)
Several years later our boys were now men.
They worked together and still remained friends.
One night while hanging out down at the club,
After doodling a while on his pay stub,
Gee turns and says “Darn! I have a plan!
Let’s quit our jobs and become businessmen!
We could bottle those widgets we make at the plant
And make ourselves rich!” But Darn said, “I can’t!
That can’t be done! I can’t take the chance!”
But Gee recognized that same song and dance.
So he went it alone, and started his quest.
Put in all he owned and borrowed the rest.
The money was short, the hours were long,
But the value of faith he knew all along.
He might not make it – it seemed for a while,
But, he does make it and sees it was all worthwhile.
A few short years later Gee drove by the place
Where his friend was still working with the same sullen face
And Darn saw his friend pass in his big Cadillac
Happy wife in the front and two kids in the back
And he thought about all the great things Gee had done.
While he’d trudged through his own life, accomplishing none.
