Poem by bbbailey*

(Part One- Love & Affection)

This I s a tale of two high school lads

Gee-I’m-Glad-I-Did and Darn-I-Wish-I-Had.

Long ago, our story begins,

Where the two of them stood outside by the gym.

Both were frustrated – their problems were many.

They were either too tall, too short, too fat, or too skinny.

And Love and Affection had escaped them so far

And to make matters worse they saw the sports car.

Inside was Vern Varsity with his cheerleader girlfriend.

Vern waved at the boys, they waved back at him.

Vern was the captain of the football team.

Perfect smile and muscles, he had everything.

Darn-I-Wish-I-Had, after Vern drove away

Said, “Boy, I’d love to be like Vern someday!

But, it’s not meant to be. I could never compete!”

And with his hands in his pockets, he trudged down the street.

What Gee-I’m-Glad-I-Did thought was quite different.

He believed in himself and made a commitment.

He shouted out loud a new battle cry:

“If Vern can do it, then so can I!”

So, he saved for a car working nights after school

And to get into shape, he swam laps ‘round the pool.

And just one year later outside of the gym

Where Darn-I-Wish-I-Had was standing again

Who drives up in a shiny red ‘Vette?

But Gee-I’m-Glad-I-Did with a pretty brunette!
