Every language has to be taught and learnt by providing/using the opportunities to enhance the four linguistic skills; listening, speaking, writing and reading. This demands the incorporation of different teaching methods in English classes like use of audio visual aids, role plays, debates, group discussions etc. A variety of vocabulary building and sentence framing activities should be conducted in the classes. Language learning will be easy and fun if students are given situations which they can easily relate to. Examples from day to day life and matters related to students’ interest need to be included in classes, so that they would have enough ideas and points to talk about.

English has to be learnt as a subject, but more than that it has to be learnt as a medium of communication. This requires practicing the language than memorizing its rules. There are three ways of learning English; the first one is to learn it as a subject with all of its rules and structures. The second method is to learn English step by step starting with speaking. As the students learn the basics of spoken English, the grammar rules can be taught one by one. The third method is self learning by the students. For this, students need to illustrate what they have learnt in their own ways; chart preparation could be one of the methods of self learning.

The students community is bored and fed up with the present way of English learning which demands them to memorize things without understanding the usage and application of language.
