Mon Ami, Frog in the Bog
by Lois Abbott Tanner
One day as I was walking in a bog,
I came upon a wee, tiny frog.
His attire was a red, gold buttoned vest,
On his head a white straw hat (his Sunday best).
He was singing in a lovely tenor voice,
An Irish lullaby, his song choice.
I said, “Good to see you my little friend.”
His reply was a formal bow, in a dignified bend.
Then tipping his wee hat off of his head,
In a very thick Irish brogue he said,
“Have we met before? I don’t recall meeting you.
But, just the same, I’m honored to see you too.”
“Would you care to discuss politics and world affairs with me,
Or would Science or Arts a better conversation topic be?
Perhaps, diagramming sentences is what you wish to do,
But, if cooking is your delight, I make a lovely cheese fondue.
It has been a while since anyone stopped and talked with me,
I urgently need some camaraderie and dialogue; can’t you see?”
“I have traveled the world up and down, far and near,
And I can proficiently discuss chivalry, martial arts, or the space frontier.
You will never be bored when you converse with me,
For I am a cultured fellow, as you can unquestionably see.
I know Bach and Mozart; I can compose a concerto or dance a minuet,
But, if you prefer to play board games, I own Scrabble and a Chess set.”
