Before a jury of his Athenian countrymen,
Socrates confronted a crucial question: in
exchange for an acquittal, would he end his
philosophizing ways? “So long as I have
breath, I will not cease seeking wisdom,”
Socrates courageously declared. Resolutely
defending his quest for truth and virtue,
Socrates affirmed his immortal, soul-searing
motto: “The unexamined life is not worth
living.”
Alas, unduly influenced by the slanderous
testimony of his accusers, over three
hundred jurors sentenced Socrates to death.
Before drinking the poisonous hemlock brew
that sealed his martyrdom, Socrates was
visited in jail by his childhood friend Crito.
