offered to use his wealth and influence to
initiate a plan that would allow Socrates to
escape Athens and his impending execution.
Gently but eloquently, Socrates rejected
Crito; he considered it unrighteous to
disregard the reverence and loyalty he owed
to Athens, the land that nursed, educated,
and, tragically, condemned him. “Has it
slipped your mind,” asked Socrates, “that the
homeland is deserving of more honor than
your parents and all your ancestors?”
Socrates was unyielding in his pursuit of the
Good Life: a life of spiritual happiness
attained through rigorous analysis and
contemplation. His selfless devotion to the
edification of his fellow man and resolution
in the face of death embodies humankind at
