passersby on topics such as the nature of
happiness, Socrates saw himself as a midwife
of ideas whose aim was to insightfully
critique and enlighten his shallow,
materialistic countrymen. Tirelessly, he
promoted spiritual betterment through the
pursuit of virtue and exhorted all to lead
thoughtful, self-examining lives.
Not all were favorable towards the city’s selfproclaimed gadfly and in one instance, a mob
set about mercilessly beating and ridiculing
him. Socrates bore the abuse calmly.
Ultimately, Socrates’ incisive wit and
uncompromising examinations publicly
shamed and embittered powerful members of
society. Charges of impiety and the
corruption of youths were brought against
him.
