Selflessness and Reverence: these attributes
are the hallmarks of an excellent citizen.
Despite great personal sacrifice, the ideal
citizen is dedicated to improving society. He
is respectful of his homeland, even though he
may disagree with her laws. No individual
has better embodied these ideals than the
ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, who
was immortalized in a series of dialogues
written by his student Plato.
In the four decades preceding his unjust
death, Socrates spent the majority of his time
in Athens’ bustling agora. Questioning
