Their main title song “Boy in
Luv” and “Just One Day” speak
generally of the same thing,
love towards a girl. However,
they are perfect foils for each
other, as “Boy in Luv” takes
a more direct and a slightly
aggressive approach to their love
confession, while “Just One Day”
is calmer in nature and is more
wistful. The fact that these two
songs were chosen to be the
promotion songs, demonstrates
the way BTS generally like to
work and express themselves. They are never just one thing.
They never have just one
meaning. BTS as a group goes
forward in a way that showcases
their many facets because a
person is never truly static. Also,
as RM has said before, love is
complex. These two songs show
the anxiety and frustration love
causes with “Boy in Luv” and the
times when love has you on cloud
nine no matter the obstacles are
like in “Just One Day.” Both are
incredibly relatable emotions if a
person has ever dabbled in love.
While love is a topic in the album,
as it tends to always be present
in life as well, the topic of “the
self” weaves throughout. Songs
like “Tomorrow” and “Spine
Breaker” are songs that dive into
self-reflection. “Tomorrow” is a
song that depicts the hardships
of everyday life as a young
person in an ever-demanding
society. It talks about how
everything can feel repetitive and
unmoving, eventually making a person feel like they are stuck
and a failure. The song doesn’t
just express these very real
emotions and thoughts, but it
also gives hope. Hope is another
BTS trademark, encouraging
listeners to always look for a way
to be happy with who they are
and what they’ve got. Essentially,
the song says not to give up and
to keep going. There is time and
power within you to do what you
want to, so do it.
