The site is situated on two parcels of land , bounded by Second Street , Third Street and Watt Street and has historically been used as a taxi rank . Alexandra Township is one of South Africa ’ s oldest townships and is important for it ’ s contribution to many facets of South African life .
ARCHITECT ’ S REPORT The nature of the brief , 16,000m 2 of retail space with a holding rank and taxi rank for eight hundred vehicles wrapped around it , required creating two buildings on the two land parcels , which are separated by Second Street and then linking the two structures across Second Street at two levels .
Block A houses the holding rank , as well as the long distance rank , which connects Alexandra to other towns and cities in South and Southern Africa . This building also houses the administration facilities of the taxi organisations and has workshop and washing spaces . Trading stalls face onto the colonnade that runs along Second Street . Taxis either enter Block A from street level or connect at first floor level across the northern bridge from Block B if they have had to drop passengers in Block B who are using the shopping centre or transferring to the Taxi Rank in Block B .
