The acquired sites for the development were rezoned from agricultural to commercial business zoning during 2005 and 2006 . Construction began in late 2006 , with the completion and opening of the centre in April 2008 . The owners of the nearby Zevenwacht Wine Estate agreed to the naming of the centre as Zevenwacht Mall .
Concept The design and concept for Zevenwacht mall was executed by Imraan Ho-Yee at Zenprop , with design development , documentation by Vivid Architects .
The initial concept for the retail project , particularly when it was first envisaged as a neighbourhood centre , was to look at a grouping of buildings viewing the development as a precinct , rather than a single building .
It was important that the development was rooted in its Cape winelands context . However , a contemporary interpretation of a ‘ Cape vernacular ’ was preferred , with a palette using stone , ‘ gable silhouettes ’, timber , and steel detailing to articulate the building both internally and externally .
Layout The retail centre is set back from the major intersection , and consists of a single level of retail , lining an area of surface parking . The mall area has a facetted layout on plan , with wider nodes formed at intersections . A central wider food mall is the focus of the food retailers , and leads onto an external landscaped terrace area that faces the forecourt parking area .
The facetted layout results in two of the three lead-in malls being angled to address the
