Fire The Rational Fire design was done by Charles Pein & Partners Inc . As always , these designs are challenging , to say the least , and specific to each application . CP & P together with the local Fire Department under the leadership of Mr Warren Scholtz , developed the design which facilitates safe egress and fire fighting during a fire condition in the mall .
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT ’ S COMMENT The landscaping was designed to bring an element of the traditional romantic Paarl landscape style to the development .
The large parking area is divided into areas with a more human scale by means of the introduction of vertical elements such as wide vine-covered pergolas in combination with Italian cypresses which lead pedestrians through shade to the entrances . A bold central line of Ficus trees leads the visitor through the parking , past a bubbling fountain and into the food court .
The building and blank façades are softened by means of stainless steel wired trellises which guide grapevines vertically up the stone columns and blank façades of the building . These were specifically chosen for their link to the Paarl winelands , for their virility and beautiful autumn colours .
The addition of clipped hedges , roses , irises , and star jasmine to focal areas , bring an element of the historic , romantic Paarl to the landscaping and were chosen for their appeal to the senses .
Further from the building , the landscaping becomes indigenous , but still keeps to the overall colour scheme . The high clay content of the soil on site had to be taken into consideration in the choice of plants . Trees were chosen from an indigenous palette , with the addition of the more historic oak trees and Cypresses creating focal avenues .
A system of borehole , storage tanks and pumps provide irrigation water to the landscaping , which is all automatically sprinkled when the centre is closed .
Rather than the usual mass planting found around shopping centres , the landscaping was carefully designed to add to the appeal and contribute to a unique shopping experience .
