Ceilings Neethling says the mall ceilings had an extremely complex design with bulkheads curving in a number of directions adding to the attractive appeal and aesthetics of the centre . Small roof lights are accommodated within these bulkheads as well as several large roof lights which will provide an element of natural light in the mall areas .
The curved design of the ceiling bulkheads , which emulates the flow of water , was carried over to the floor tiling . To achieve this curved tiling pattern , some 1,400m of circular cutting had to be done on site .
In addition to being in a JV on this project , both the client and Murray & Roberts have a strong focus on promoting and developing emerging contractors and specific focus on local BEE .
“ Many of the sub-contractors on this project were BEE companies . In fact , when adjudicating sub-contracts for the project , preference was given to BEE contractors or those companies that had good empowerment credentials ,” Neethling says .
The workforce on the Vaal Mall contract was ± 1,000 , with a local representation of between 70 % and 80 % and this included both skilled and unskilled labour .
“ Developing the management skills of the local sub-contractors formed part of the challenge on the project ,” Neethling says . “ In this they were ably assisted by a consultant for the Emfuleni Local Council and a representative for the local contractors ’ workers ’ forum . Both played a vital role in the effective management of the local BEE sub-contractors .”
