Paarl Mall is a 35,000m2 single level regional shopping centre set in the picturesque Drakenstein Valley . The mall opened its doors in October 2005 and is anchored by Pick n Pay , Edgars and Woolworths . The shopping centre ’ s plan is designed in the shape of a slightly curved boomerang , which makes the most of its surroundings and offers a food court with both fast food and restaurant areas as well as parking for 2,000 cars . This development has been awarded the 5th Edition of the BPB International Trophy in Madrid for excellence in ceiling design as well as a SAPOA 2006 Award for Design Excellence .
Client Brief The developers were looking for a design that would complement the heritage of the Paarl area and , at the same time , promote the excitement and convenience of an urban lifestyle . Situated along the N1 motorway and adjacent to the KWV Winery , Paarl Mall is a gateway to the Paarl and Franschhoek wine routes . It is the first major building that the motorist experiences after crossing the Drakenstein mountain passes or exiting the Huguenot tunnel and has been host to The Berg River Canoe Marathon prize giving .
The design of the shopping centre needed to take its cue from the architectural vernacular of the Paarl area . MDS Architecture , therefore , undertook an intensive study of local architectural styles and materials .
The shape of the mall , a slightly curved boomerang , echoes the surrounding Drakenstein mountain range
