“ The small house was the starting point, the seed around which everything else grew. We echoed its terracotta Marseille roof tiles and Doric columns in a contemporary language, while keeping the building mass broken up so it wouldn’ t dominate the village fabric. Our aim was to create working spaces that are comfortable, naturally ventilated, and sympathetic to the rhythm of the village,” Slee says.
At Bendehuis, Slee approached the project with careful attention to scale and context so that the new building would complement, rather than dominate, the surrounding precinct. The design breaks the structure into smaller volumes that echo the village-like character of Hazelwood.
Large surfaces of brickwork are softened by terracotta breeze-block balconies, allowing light and air to filter naturally through the building.
