AQHA FEATURE: RIDING WITH PURPOSE: TIRRA EWERS AND HER QUARTER HORSE JOURNEY
“ He is very much an old-soul type of horse and has always held a very special place in my heart,” she says.
Whiskey taught Tirra that some of the most important lessons don ' t necessarily come from winning or competing, but from the experiences shared along the way.
Her second horse, Best Ta Be Hot Q-94177, known as Kyle, is by CP Surely The Best Q-77036 and out of QXH Hot Cash Q-71869. Kyle helped take Tirra’ s riding to another level and gave her the opportunity to compete alongside some incredibly talented youth competitors.
“ He challenged me to become more confident and consistent as a rider,” Tirra says.
Kyle’ s loving personality has also made him a favourite.
“ He absolutely loves attention and being around people. He has a big personality and has taught me a lot about confidence, patience and stepping outside of my comfort zone.”
Then there is How About A Dance Q-98732, affectionately known as Dizzy, by No Doubt About Him Q-85991 and out of Groovin Q-90080. Tirra says she is forever grateful for everything Dizzy has helped her achieve over the past couple of years.
“ Dizzy has helped me grow enormously not only as a rider but also as a competitor and as a person. He has pushed me to become more confident in myself and has taught me the importance of trust and consistency.”
Described as one of the sweetest horses you could meet, Dizzy has a genuine willingness to please.
“ No matter what we are doing or how big the challenge may be, he always tries his absolute heart out for me in and out of the show pen.”
While each horse has played a different role, together they have helped shape the rider Tirra is today.
“ I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from all three of these horses,” she says.“ Each of my horses have played a different role in my riding journey and I wouldn’ t be the rider I am today without them.”
For Tirra, the lessons and connections created along the way are even more valuable than the results.
“ They have shown me that becoming a better rider is an ongoing journey and that there is always something new to learn, improve on and understand when working with a horse.”
A VERSATILE COMPETITOR
Tirra competes across a wide range of classes, including Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Trail, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Showmanship and Halter. That versatility has helped her develop a broad understanding of both horse and rider, while continually challenging herself to improve. For Tirra, one of the biggest lessons her horses have taught her is that every day brings a new opportunity.
“ Whether it’ s overcoming a struggle or a new challenge, there is always something that can be worked on and improved,” she says.
It is this mindset of continual improvement that continues to drive her forward.
MENTORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Behind every developing rider are often people who provide guidance, encouragement and opportunities to grow. For Tirra, Holly and Kane Skopp have been significant influences and mentors throughout her journey.
“ They have always pushed me to improve while also believing in me and giving me opportunities to challenge myself,” she says.
Their support extends beyond the show ring.
“ No matter if it’ s at a show or just training, they are always there sharing advice and support.”
Tirra is deeply appreciative of the time, effort and belief they have invested in her and the confidence they have helped her build.
CHASING THE ULTIMATE DREAM
Looking towards the future, Tirra has ambitious goals for herself and her horses. Her long term vision is to continue growing within the horse industry, compete at a high level and build a career that allows her to work with horses every day. And there is one achievement that sits firmly at the top of her bucket list.
“ My ultimate dream is to win a World Title.”
Five years from now, Tirra hopes to be continuing that journey, developing her skills, competing at a high level and building a future within the industry she loves.
