Kindles to Replace iPads
Brother Rice ’ s Technology Department has outlined a solution To address the frustrations of many teachers over the iPads
By Teddy Dunn Chieftain staff iPads and learning : Some love this combination , including most students and a few teachers , but a majority of the Brother Rice staff has grown to dislike this relationship . Many teachers advise against iPad use in their classes , and some make it punishable by detention , or even a dreaded trip to Mr . Williamson ’ s office . The primary issue is accessibility to games and YouTube during class time , when students should be taking notes or paying attention .
Many teachers have been pushed to the breaking point recently and , in the most recent Wednesday staff meeting , the tech department offered a solution to this problem : A recall on all iPads in 2021-22 and replacing them with the Amazon Kindle .
The Kindle has a number of solutions to the many problems created by the iPads . Teachers have found that students are able to find ways around the restrictions on games and other distractions in the classroom . Many problems the students have with the iPads will also be addressed , including how bulky the iPads can be in a backpack . The Kindle doesn ’ t come with a keyboard , meaning you can fit an extra folder or two in your backpack , rather than a keyboard that is useless .
The Kindles will be given to the students with the only three apps it has been programmed to allow : notes , books , and camera . The notes and camera apps will be closely monitored , and all suspicious activity will immediately send a notification to Mr . McCoy , who will review the activity and , if inappropriate , issue the student a strike . Once one receives three strikes , he will receive a threeday , out-of-school suspension and lose all Kindle privileges for the remainder of that school year .
All apps will require four-step identification , meaning you must first enter your school-issued , 20-character password , followed by a fingerprint scan . Then you must sign a consent form and scan your school ID .
While everyone is very familiar with the iPads , the cons that the iPads are causing greatly outweigh the pros , such as faster and easier learning . The faculty and administration have unanimously approved this changer by the tech department , so look forward to big tech changes next year .
