April 2022 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 13

Wilsonville Library

By GREG MARTIN

Come check out Storytime in the Barn

Howdy Wilsonville Library fans !
Once or twice a week , a distinguished older gentleman visits the library ( and if he ’ s reading this , he knows who he is ),
MARTIN and takes the opportunity to tell me at least one corny ‘ dad ’ joke . Usually I have an even bigger groaner for him in return . And in that spirit , here ’ s a timely one for all of you : If April showers bring May flowers , then what do Mayflowers bring ? Answer : pilgrims !
Hopefully , in addition to showers , April will also bring some happy news to a library that is very , very tired of COVID-19 restrictions — just like you are ! Beginning on March 12 masks became optional in indoor public spaces . That ’ s because the numbers of people affected by COVID-19 have gone down and down , and might just , by the time you read this , have gone down even further . Che bel sogno !
One thing that April is not bringing ( at least at press time ) is a whole slew of programming . It turns out that it takes some time to reanimate our desiccated cornucopia of adult , teen , and children ’ s offerings . Also , we ’ re short a few big public gathering spaces , as they have been repurposed into offices , recording studios and staging areas for the new furniture we ’ ve been trying to get for , oh , three years now ! Stay tuned for more and better programs next month .
Meanwhile , THIS month : Those of you with small children may have attended our Storytime in the Barn , at the superdrafty ( and therefore COVID-unfriendly ) Stein-Boozier Barn , located across the street from the library in Memorial Park . If you haven ’ t attended , hey — it ’ s kinda fun ! Also , it ’ s definitely warmer this month than last ! Storytimes will happen on Thursdays , April 7 , 14 , 21 , and 28 at 10:30 a . m .
But , if you ’ d prefer to stay inside , we ’ ll
still have Zoom-flavored Toddler and Baby Time LIVE at 10:30 a . m . on Tuesdays , April 5 , 12 , 19 and 26 . The broadcast is live on Zoom and YouTube . Join the talented children ’ s crew as they keep your young ’ uns captivated until ( hopefully soon ) we can all meet again here in the library !
Join us online on Wednesday , April 6 at 11 a . m . for ‘ Haiku : Poetry for Everyone ’. The Japanese haiku , a short three-line unrhymed poem , has become a popular art form around the world . Learn about the history and evolution of the haiku , and key aspects of composing a haiku . Then , the one-hour class will look at some classic Japanese haiku in English translation , as well as some haiku written by contemporary Oregon poets presented by our very own multi-talented Andrea Erickson , MA ( Japanese Literature ). Sign up online to receive the Zoom meeting code !
All day Saturday , April 23 Friends of Trees is hosting a tree planting opportunity to help restore the city ’ s tree canopy in partnership with the city of Wilsonville .
Those residents interested in a replacement street tree ( to be planted in the front road or along the street ) may sign up by March 21 ( Sorry , kinda late !) to select a high-quality tree from a list of approved , site-specific varieties . The cost is $ 35 per tree , and Friends of Trees is working with residents for whom cost is a barrier to ensure that trees are available . To participate , visit friendsoftrees . org / get-a-tree / or contact Litzy Venturi , LitzyV @ friendsoftrees . org or 503-467-2519 .
Before I forget , let me remind you about our latest online offering — Hoopla ! Hoopla has scads and scads of audiobooks , graphic novels , movies and TV shows , and the whole Great Courses video catalog ( college lectures ) to boot ! Free to you , you can download the app to your phone , tablet , computer or TV set and start listening and watching to your heart ’ s delight right away . No fees , and better yet , no hold lists — everything is always available ! Try Hoopla today !
Last but not least , there is a Teen Event happening on Friday , April 8 at 7 p . m . What is it ? Beats me ! Better call to find out , or else ( you knew this was coming , didn ’ t you ?) CHECK THE WEBSITE !!
All the best to you and yours from your hard-working library crew . We hope to see you here soon and often . Until next month : Enjoy the spring — you ’ ve earned it !
