Our branch donates Easter baskets to kids in need

When Jason went to bed that Saturday night he breathed a sigh of relief .
“ Oh , good ” he thought , “ I didn ’ t have school today
WIESENTHAL and don ’ t have
school tomorrow . I like days off because school is not fun and all the kids try to tease me because they say I ’ m not as smart as they are . True , I ’ m pretty near the bottom of my class . But I am as smart as they are .”
Why is Jason near the bottom of the class ? It is because at 8 years old he had been living in a car with one of his parents and moving from
school to school , never in the same one for very long . There were weeks and months when he wasn ’ t in school at all . When that parent died of COVID-19 he was on his own and happened to tell a teacher about his troubles . That teacher referred him to Boys & Girls Aid and his life changed . Now at Boys & Girls Aid he was in a temporary home where the adults were trained in therapy . These therapists then placed him in a good foster home where his school attendance was regular . He even started to catch up with math and reading but it would take a while .
Back to Saturday night , Jason fell asleep and slept soundly . On Sunday morning when he woke up he saw something he had never seen before . “ What is this ?” Racing down stairs with it he found his foster parents and asked them to explain .
“ It ’ s an Easter basket ,” said the dad . “ It ’ s for you and today is Easter .” Jason thought for a moment , “ What ’ s Easter and is this all for me ? Can I keep it all ?” The dad said , “ Yes , you can keep it all
and look , the other kids also have one .” Then there was a brief explanation of what Easter is .
Jason was amazed and , looking around , he noticed that the other baskets were all different . “ Can I trade things with Joe and Sue ?” “ Well , I guess you can but everyone has to agree that trading is OK .” Joe and Sue nodded and then the fun began . Jason kept all his candy of course but the toys , some of the socks , stuffed animals and other good things were on the market . Easter was a great day at that house ! Jason was very good at trading .
Does this representative story happen ? Yes it does , for many of the children served by Boys & Girls Aid . It occurs every year and the baskets and items in them are all donated with love by the members of the Charbonneau Cypress Branch of Boys & Girls Aid . The branch will be hosting our Crab and Rib Dinner once again . It is scheduled for April 23 . Tickets to attend are required . Watch for the notices to arrive but , if they don ’ t , go online .
