SHOWCASES OHSE Week Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) together with the Food Science and Technology program and Monash University Student Association came up with OHSE week to enhance the student learning experience and communication skills. A total of 13 posters were prepared by 50 students from the FST3810 Human Nutrition unit. ASEAN Entrepreneur Week Monash Entrepreneur Club’s annual ASEAN Entrepreneur Week featured three events: the Speaker Series, Bazaar, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Challenge. The Speaker Series featured five industry leaders including Dato' Cheah See Yeong, CEO of Baskin Robbins, and Daniel Cerventus, Founder of TEDx Malaysia. The CSR Challenge was a social entrepreneurship pitch competition that saw nine teams present solutions and ideas to challenges faced by non- governmental organisations. The challenge was supported by GE Malaysia, Petrosains, WWF Malaysia, Thoughts in Gear, and Goodkids. Monash's Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub sponsored cash prizes. THE SIR JOHN MONASH PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES Global food security in the 21st century: A challenge we can meet DR JIM PEACOCK Distinguished Professor, University of Technology Sydney The first Sir John Monash Lecture of the year highlighted the need to increase the supply of nutritious food in line with the world’s growing population. The government’s business: Politics, policies and the corporate sector in Malaysia PROFESSOR EDMUND TERENCE GOMEZ Professor of Political Economy, Universiti Malaya In this lecture, Professor Gomez discussed the power shift involving the nexus between politics, business and the federal government. Food Science and Technology Week In conjunction with Food Science and Technology Week, interesting activities were organised to stimulate interest among undergraduate students in the field. Students enjoyed a Food Bowl Quiz, Oratory Competition and a Food Product Exhibition. The latter had our students working in groups to showcase innovative food prototypes, which resulted in five delicious products: sweet potato soup, oat bar, meat jerky, spicy dip sauce, and a sweet and spicy soup. Prizes were sponsored by Nestlé. The invention of high-efficiency blue LEDs and the future of solid-state lighting PROFESSOR SHUJI NAKAMURA Professor in Materials, University of California The Nobel Laureate shared a brief history of his upbringing, the history and applications of LEDs, and how the blue LED was invented. Nanostructured materials for energy and biomedical applications PROFESSOR JACKIE YING Executive Director, Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology Professor Ying spoke on the unique properties of various synthesised nanostructured materials, and the implications for energy and biomedical fields. Financial sustainability of health care in Europe: Brexit boom or Brexit bust? PROFESSOR MICHAEL DRUMMOND Professor of Health Economics, University of York The year's final lecture explored the contribution of health technology assessment and economic evaluation to the financial sustainability of health care in Europe. 10
