basketballscotland Annual Report
Highland and Islands Region
The 2012-2013 season has been a busy one for basketball in the Highlands and Islands. It has been very encouraging
to see so many new volunteers getting involved and the support from Active Schools, PE teachers and local Councils
has been great. The North of Scotland RDL, now in its second season, has grown not only in numbers of teams, but
also officials, coaches and overall standard of play.
The Highland Regional Development Officer (RDO) has managed to spend some time in Uist and
Shetland where they have great plans for basketball. basketballscotland even managed to run a
Future Starz programme in Uist and got 16 of their U12 players down to Edinburgh for the
national camp, a great experience for them. More and more schools are getting involved in grass
roots basketball, running sessions, playing friendly fixtures and starting local leagues.
Highland’s basketball crew had another successful season, with 12 youngsters getting through a mountain of volunteering and completing officiating and coaching courses. Our main club, the Highland Bears, added another Division
1 team this year, U16 women, who competed well in the league.
This season a very successful U14 tournament was delivered with teams from all over the country. Highland also
celebrated 50 years of the Claymore cup with 16 men’s teams competing for the title. At the top end of the player
pathway we had 23 players in development and national squads and a very busy summer camp in Inverness, with
players and coaches from all over Scotland and Europe.
Highland Regional Development League (RDL) 2012-2013
