Camp Camp is a valuable part of the Girl Scouting experience, and can include outdoor challenges, nature and environmental activities or Resident Camp. Camp includes high-adventure activities that girls love, like horseback riding, adventure courses, whitewater rafting, archery, zip lines and more. All camp programs are girl-centered and designed to help each girl find her confidence, discover her leadership potential and have fun in a supportive, all-girl environment. Girls have enjoyed the cool shade trees at Camp Skymeadow for decades. They’ve gathered the twigs to start fires and studied the fallen leaves. Now they’re taking on a new challenge and enjoying the view from the tree tops. Thanks to the support of the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania invested in tree-climbing equipment and staff training to offer tree-climbing programs on an ongoing basis. In the past, GSWPA partnered with other organizations to provide this opportunity, but with the experience and equipment now part of the council’s program assets, girls have even more occasions to take on the next challenge – whether it is scaling the oak or ash tree! Celebrating 90 years of fun and friendship at Camp Redwing Girl Scouts, former camp staff, alumnae and their families gathered at Camp Redwing to celebrate the camp’s 90th birthday on Saturday, July 20, 2013. “My girls would love to be at Redwing every week of the summer,” said Lisa Richert, a Girl Scout troop leader from Bethel Park. “And they all want to work here someday.” Visitors to the birthday celebration enjoyed making cement stepping stones, taking hay rides around camp, trying archery, hiking to the creek and eating a cookout dinner. A flag ceremony, skits by the fire, and a candlelight ceremony were some of the favorite Girl Scout pastimes that were also part of the event’s line-up. Camp Redwing spans 123 beautiful acres in Renfrew and features some of the most sought-after activities in Girl Scouting — horseback riding, archery, swimming and canoeing. 9
