B. Unique Accomplishments
Recognition
The Carlos Rosario community is particularly proud of the significant recognition that it received
during the 2006-07 school year:

In May 2007, Sonia Gutierrez, CEO and Founder of Carlos Rosario International
Public Charter School, was honored for her 35 years of commitment to the education
of immigrant students in Washington, DC. She received recognition from President
Bush, Mayor Fenty, Puerto Rican Governor Acevedo Vilas, the National Council of
La Raza, Representatives Baca and Hinojosa of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus,
and DC City Council. In April, Ms. Gutierrez was also inducted into the National
Alliance for Public Charter Schools’ Hall of Fame, honoring her pioneering efforts in
the development and growth of charter schools.

Carlos Rosario School passed the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools’
Mid-Point Accreditation Review, acknowledging that the school remains on course in
providing high-quality academic programs. The Middle States reviewer found Carlos
Rosario School to be “a model for the accreditation process.” It is the only
accredited adult charter school in the United States.
The Center for Language Education and Development at Georgetown University
validated Rosario’s ESL curriculum, finding that it satisfies all criteria in the
Standards for Adult Education ESL Programs as published by Teachers of English to
Speakers of Other Languages, the top professional organization in the field of ESL.

o Carlos Rosario School has become a Microsoft Academy. This will enable the school
to align its Information Technology curriculum to Microsoft standards and provide
students with recognized IT certification.
Noteworthy Efforts

The following staff published and presented during school year 2006-2007:
Allison Kokkoros, Principal, published an article entitled, “Stakeholder
Feedback: An Invaluable Resource in Literacy Program Leadership” in
DCLearn’s quarterly newsletter, Knowledge Builder, Summer 2006 edition.
Dr. Ana-Maria Nuevo, Vice Principal, presented at the AAAL (American
Association for Applied Linguistics) Annual Conference in Costa Mesa, CA
on April 21, 2007. The presentation was entitled: “Modified Output and L2
Development in Learner-Learner Interaction.”
Allison Kokkoros, Principal, and Aracelly Watts, Workforce Program
Coordinator, presented at the NCLR Conference in Miami, FL on July 24,
2007. The presentation was entitled: “Bridges to Workforce Success.”
