services/recruitment, childcare and health referrals, extracurricular activities, student government, and fundraising for scholarships. It should be noted, too, that the Supportive Services Department provides its services in five major languages: English, Spanish, Amharic, Vietnamese, and French. Through these services, the Department provides development opportunities to the student body and serves as a bridge to student success within the larger DC community. TABLE 1 provides information about services offered during the 2006-2007 academic year, with a “unit of service” being defined as a 15-minute block of time in which a staff member provides a service to a student. In total, 28,611 units of services were provided. Counselors offer one-on-one counseling that includes discussions about higher education opportunities in public and private colleges as well as in universities, vocational training programs, evaluation referrals, the application and admission process, and financial aid.
