CONCEPT: Photography is a uniquely powerful vehicle
for sharing a singular vision. This workshop targets
those interested in cultivating a cohesive body of work
with a distinct visual voice. Investigate how the invisible
is brought to life with photography by engaging in
discussions that address the mysterious and intimate
language of symbols, surrogates, iconography and
metaphors as means to pursue a heightened visual
language. Join us as we delve deeper into the art of
photography and explore the personal vs. the universal,
the constructed vs. the found, and how to avoid the
pitfalls of stereotype and cliché.
CONCEPT: Join us on a journey through history as we
investigate the optical and mechanical drawing aids
that artists have used since the early 17th century. In
recent years, artist David Hockney ignited controversy
by outlining the ways the “old masters” used these
aids when creating their masterpieces. This workshop
explores various drawing and painting techniques as
informed by optical drawing aids such as camera obscura,
mirror projections and the camera lucida. We spend
extensive time drawing with the NeoLucida, a modern
reinterpretation of the camera lucida.
CONCEPT: Transform your images with this exciting
exploration of the digital darkroom. Seán Duggan,
the co-author of The Creative Digital Darkroom, Real
World Digital Photography and Photoshop Masking &
Compositing, leads this inspiring workshop that combines
digital photography with presentation and artistic
discovery. Explore creative possibilities for improving your
photographs in the digital darkroom and learn creative
enhancements for straight photographic images. In our
artistic explorations, both with our cameras and in the
digital darkroom, we search for the extraordinary in the
ordinary.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students practice digital
photography, digital printmaking and create a digital
workflow with Adobe Photoshop.
ACTIVITIES: Daily discussions, written exercises and
reviews of work in progress. Individual assignments help
participants hone their abilities, recognize and capture
emotional content and create memorable images.
FACULTY: Cig Harvey’s photographs have been widely
exhibited and can be found in the permanent collections
of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the International
Museum of Photography and the George Eastman House.
Her monograph, “You Look At Me Like An Emergency,”
was published in 2012. Cig teaches workshops and
lectures at institutions around the world.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students focus primarily on
drawing techniques as a foundation for final rendering.
Students explore their preferred medium as an extension
of drawing exercises. Final media may include: pencil,
pen/ink, paint, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, etc.
ACTIVITIES: We look at historical examples of drawing
technologies leading to extensive production time. The
studio space is used for still life and portraiture and we
venture outdoors for landscape and field drawing.
FACULTY: Pablo Garcia is an Assistant Professor at
the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Pablo’s
work centers on reverse engineering historical art and
design techniques for a contemporary audience. He
is the creator (with Golan Levin) of the NeoLucida, a
modern reinterpretation of the camera lucida—a 19thcentury optical drawing aid popular in the days before
photography.

essential camera techniques: composition, existing light,
mastering the camera’s light meter, extending dynamic
range and methods for technical and creative control in
the camera. We use Adobe Lightroom to organize and
enhance our images. We study specialized techniques
in Adobe Photoshop for creative transformations that
include HDR and panorama images, color tinting, masking
techniques for precise tonal adjustments and more.

and educator. He teaches digital capture and workflow for the
School of Visual Arts in New York City and leads workshops
and seminars at venues across the country. He is an Adobe
