This workshop targets those interested in cultivating a cohesive body of work with a distinct visual voice. Investigate how the invisible is brought to life with photography by engaging in discussions that address the mysterious and intimate language of symbols, surrogates, iconography and metaphors as means to pursue a heightened visual language. Join us as we delve deeper into the art of photography and explore the personal vs. the universal, the constructed vs. the found, and how to avoid the pitfalls of stereotype and cliché. CONCEPT: Join us on a journey through history as we investigate the optical and mechanical drawing aids that artists have used since the early 17th century. In recent years, artist David Hockney ignited controversy by outlining the ways the “old masters” used these aids when creating their masterpieces. This workshop explores various drawing and painting techniques as informed by optical drawing aids such as camera obscura, mirror projections and the camera lucida. We spend extensive time drawing with the NeoLucida, a modern reinterpretation of the camera lucida. CONCEPT: Transform your images with this exciting exploration of the digital darkroom. Seán Duggan, the co-author of The Creative Digital Darkroom, Real World Digital Photography and Photoshop Masking & Compositing, leads this inspiring workshop that combines digital photography with presentation and artistic discovery. Explore creative possibilities for improving your photographs in the digital darkroom and learn creative enhancements for straight photographic images. In our artistic explorations, both with our cameras and in the digital darkroom, we search for the extraordinary in the ordinary.
