SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
SKILL LEVEL: I - II
CONCEPT: Two art forms collide in this fascinating look
at the intersection of photography and painting. Join
us for an engaging exploration of the artistic synthesis
between these two distinct art forms. Discover new
transfer techniques that integrate photographic images
and text directly onto painted surfaces. Using traditional
collage and photomontage, master new methods that
allow for opaque and translucent layers. Reductive
methods such as sanding and scraping reveal the
history of earlier photographic layers and suggest an
archaeological approach to image development.
CONCEPT: Discover the limitless possibilities of digital
photography and immerse yourself in the scenic beauty
of Colorado! For beginners or those looking to enhance
their basic photography skills, this workshop introduces
the technical aspects of digital photography and the
concepts behind photographic images. Learn skill
building, creative picture making, editing and evaluating
images, and achieve a thorough understanding of optimal
camera controls for shooting styles. Instruction includes
apertures, shutters, equivalent exposures, using available
light, portraiture and conceptual topics. Encounter an
atmosphere of exploration, practice and play that appeals
to those new to digital photography or anyone interested
in fully exploring more functions. All levels have the
opportunity to take pictures of the amazing locales
Colorado has to offer.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Utilize traditional collage
with photographic material (text and image), digital
manipulation of imagery for output to Xerox Gum
Transfer and Thermofax on acrylic and gouache painting.
Reductive approaches include sanding and scraping on
paper, panel and canvas.
ACTIVITIES: We begin each morning with a technical
demonstration illustrated with visual examples from
contemporary art. A range of integrated photographic
painting approaches will be introduced on paper, canvas
and panels in acrylic. By midweek, our investigations
continue to larger artworks tailored to each student.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital cameras
with manual exposure capabilities and Adobe Lightroom
to import, edit and print images.
ACTIVITIES: We demonstrate digital camera functions,
shooting, image processing and printing. Demos and
lectures are complemented by daily field trips to explore
some of the Rocky Mountains’ most beautiful areas.
FACULTY: Kate Leonard is a Professor of Art at Colorado
College where she directs the Graphics Research Lab, an
innovative space for printmaking and photography. She is
a painter and printmaker.
FACULTY: Rick Dailey is the Studio Coordinator of
Photography and New Media at Anderson Ranch. He
received his M.F.A. from the University of South Florida.
Rick’s work is exhibited nationally.

SKILL LEVEL: II - IV (Basic Adobe Lightroom and Adobe
Photoshop knowledge required.)
CONCEPT: Embark on a creative journey where old
techniques are merged with new. In this workshop,
encaustic painting techniques and digital photography are
combined using collage, painting and transfer processes.
Together we use the encaustic medium to transform
digital prints by adding additional layers of meaning.
Through project assignments, engaging discussions and
demonstrations, students gain a thorough knowledge of
encaustic painting techniques.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use encaustic
painting and collage on wood panels and heavy
papers; digital printing on fine-art digital papers; Adobe
Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and laser transfers.
ACTIVITIES: We demonstrate painting, collage and
digital printing techniques and develop photo-encaustic
collage projects. Students create digital prints of their
own photographic imagery supplemented by found
imagery, objects and collage materials.
FACULTY: Mia Semingson works in photography,
video, performance and artists’ books. She received
her M.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder
and subsequently taught photography and book arts
there for 11 years. She exhibits her work nationally and
