Arches National Park is a 73,234 acre wonderland of eroded sandstone fins , towers , ribs , gargoyles , hoodoos , balanced rocks , and , of course , as the name suggests , arches . Indeed , the park has the largest proliferation of arches in the world , with over 2,000 catalogued . Opportunities to explore abound , from the scenic roads that slice through the park to its many trails such as the world-famous Delicate Arch Trail , and the Windows Primitive Loops . One of the best ways to absorb the vistas is to sit amongst the rusthued rocks and watch the sun set . As the largest national park in Utah , Canyonlands has wave after wave of deep canyons , towering mesas , pinnacles , cliffs and spires stretching across 527 square miles . For hikers , the Needles district is the park ’ s hub for welldeveloped trails and therefore the most popular . Alternatively , Island in the Sky hikes also has similarly groomed trails , but they ’ re nestled high atop a mesa that ’ s wedged between the Colorado and Green Rivers . It ’ s here you ’ ll find family-friendly hikes such as Mesa Arch , which may be easy and short but has the most amazing vistas . For cyclists there are ample paved scenic roads to explore . Any itinerary to southern Utah should include Monument Valley , an iconic symbol of the American West and sacred heart of the Navajo Nation . The valley hosts towering sandstone rock formations that combine with the surrounding mesas , buttes and desert environment , to create one of the natural wonders of the world . Little wonder then that it has provided the backdrop to hundreds of movies . For a closer look , follow the 17 mile Valley Drive , a dirt road running through the spectacular scenery which takes in sights and formations such as Mitten Buttes and the famous Totem Pole . Stay a night or so and step out after dark to appreciate the timelessness and wonder of the Milky Way .

Getting there : From Salt Lake City , Arches is 3½ hours drive and Canyonlands 4 hours drive . Monument Valley is about 3 hours drive from the Grand Canyon or 5 hours from Phoenix .
