Mesmerising wild landscapes of sand , stone and sky
Zion National Park may lie in the desert , but the terrain is anything but barren . Formed by millions of years of erosion , its exceptional rock formations , backcountry trails and unique wildlife attract over 4 million annual visitors . For those who like to walk , Zion is a dream destination with trails ranging from half-mile paved hikes to multi-day routes . Popular options include Emerald Pools Trail with its spring-fed pools , waterfalls and canyon vistas ; The Narrows , which follows a river through a huge slot canyon ; and Canyon Overlook Trail , which may be just half a mile long , but it delivers some of the most spectacular park views . The seven-mile long Zion Canyon Scenic Drive follows the north fork of the Virgin River through some of the park ’ s most outstanding landscapes . The road is closed to cars from April to October , however , regular park shuttle buses operate giving you the option to hop on and off at scenic sites . It ’ s also possible to hire a bike and cycle this route . Around 80 miles east of Zion is Bryce Canyon National Park , where over millions of years water and wind have carved into the plateau endless fields of distinctive red rock pillars , called hoodoos , which jut up from the floor of a huge natural amphitheatre . Whether an easy short loop or challenging adventure appeals a network of intertwined hiking trails provide the best way to see the park ’ s famous hoodoos , spires and sandstone fins . Maybe opt for the enjoyable Fairyland Loop , the Mossy Cave Trail or the popular Rim Trail . The 18-mile scenic drive ( Highway 63 ) is an alternative way to see the superlative scenery with recommended stops at Sunrise , Sunset , Inspiration and Bryce viewpoints . As an accredited International Dark Sky Park , Bryce Canyon also promises world-class stargazing . On a clear night you may see Jupiter and Venus as well as the Milky Way stretching across the sky .
Getting there : From Las Vegas , Zion is around 2½ hours drive and Bryce Canyon 4 hours drive .
Best time to go : Both parks are open year-round and experience diverse weather . April to October is considered the best time and is also the most popular . from £ 115 per person per night from £ 169 per person per night from £ 55 per person per night
