The driver towed vehicle weight exceeding the capacity of the towing attachment. 2. The driver towed vehicle weight exceeding the maximum laden weight. Given these charges have arisen following an investigation into a crash by police, we can determine a number of things: 1. It is possible for investigating police to ascertain the approximate weight of a caravan following a crash. 2. The caravan was allegedly found to be heavier than the rated capacity of the tow hitch of the towing vehicle. In general it’s important to be aware that the implications of this case are very real for anyone towing any form of trailer or caravan. Know that laws are in place to prosecute those involved in a crash where excessive weight is a factor. AfMA members are encouraged to contact their local Pedders store to weigh any vehicles that you would normally load or tow with. Whilst there is normally a fee for this, just mention you’re an AfMA member and the fee will be waived (this benefit is extended to your employees as well). Follow this link to head directly to Pedders store finder. 3. The caravan’s laden weight allegedly exceeded the caravan’s ATM. (Source: RV Daily) ISSUE 18 2019 / WWW.AFMA.NET.AU 17
