Early life
Florence Mills was born in January of 1896 in Washington D.C. She was born Florence Winfrey to her parents Nellie and John Winfrey.
When she was six she started to sing with her older sisters Olivia and Maude. The sisters soon there after formed a group called the "Mills Sisters" and performed in venues all along the Atlantic Seaboard. A few years later she joined the Tennessee Ten where she met her future husband Ulysses Thompson.
