Career

Florence Mills was an African American cabaret singer, dancer, and comedian. She became known for her delicate voice and effervescing stage presence. She had a reputation for having a beautiful high-pitched voice, unparalleled dance movements, and comedic timing the made her an incomparable figure during the Harlem Renaissance.

Mills launched her musical career by taking a lead roll in the hit Broadway Musical called "Shuffle Along." After "Shuffle Along" she moved to the night club business. She was hired be the Plantation Club and performed nightly. Mills also headlined several shows overseas and became a very popular national figure.

Career Continued

Mills fell ill in 1926 due to tuberculosis and her life ended shortly there after. A year later at the age of 31 she passed away. Thousands of people came to pay their respects at the funeral home. Mills is remembered as one of the most loved and prolific female African American entertainers of her time.
