Career

- His career spanned five decades from the 1920s to the 1960s ,and different eras in the history of jazz

-Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance

-Experimented with the trombone

-Played with Erskine Tate's Little Symphony which played at the Vendome Theatre

-Armstrong also had success with vocal recordings including versions of famous songs composed by his old friend Hoagy Carmichael

-Armstrong appeared in more than a dozen Hollywood films

-First African American to host a nationally broadcast radio show in the 1930s

Career Continued

-He was hospitalized for a heart attack and once he was released he continued his trumpet playing

-Armstrong died of a heart attack in his sleep on July 6, 1971 which was a month before his 70th birthday
