Printing Solutions Shereno Rewarded for risks A printer is a printer is a printer… Not quite! There are many contributing factors that, if properly managed, can facilitate a business’s expansion. One of these factors is risk. Shereno Printers, a Boksburg-based design and printing company, took a huge risk shortly after inception. Satellite office established In fact, the demand for printing from Pretoria was considerable enough for the company to open a satellite office in Pretoria. “Quantity, re-orders and technical support had a lot to do with the decision,” Vee says. “Another factor was some government departments required support when it came to layout and design of material to be printed. Printing for freedom Starting out in 1966 servicing the Boksburg region at the time, Shereno Printers took a risk which may have resulted in more than business closure at the time. In a time of political uncertainty and upheaval, the printing company offered a ‘voice’ for some of the then banned organisations – the ANC among them. This was a conscious decision made to lend support and be a participant in the struggle for freedom. “The risks incurred were very high” explains HR and Admin Manager Vee Garrib. “This kind of risk-taking is not for the faint-hearted and was totally morally justifiable.” In the early 1990’s, a decision was made to broaden our service offering to make Shereno a one-stop shop for all printing requirements. “That’s when our layout and design department was born. Subsequently, digital printing came on stream. We also undertake large-format printing, point of sale printing, digital embossing, braille printing, reproductions of CD’s and DVD’s, branding of corporate gifts, among others,” he says. A significant competitor When one considers the ‘big industry players’, Shereno is right up among them and, according to Vee, “many of them have come to recognise us as an important competitor.” Today, Shereno Printers competes for Government business on equal terms with all the large players.
