ELEVATION &
LIFE ZONES
In Colorado we have many different life zones because we have prairies
and mountains and all the space in between. The way we identify life zones
is to look at elevation. Elevation is a way of measuring how high the land is
above sea level. Denver is known as the “mile high city” because it is 5,280
feet (one mile) above sea level.
What do you think happens to the climate as you go up in elevation?
The climate gets colder as the elevation rises. Different kinds of plants and
animals survive at different elevations.
DRAW A PICTURE SHOWING THE CONTRAST BETWEEN
PLANTS AND ANIMALS AT DIFFERENT ELEVATIONS.
Put a person in your drawing. What do people do when they go to
different elevations?
