Jackson Middle School All-State Honor Band/Choir
Tom Hagerty, principal, introduced students who were named to state level music groups. Mikayla Markuson
Whitehouse was named to the Minnesota Band Directors Association All-State Honor Band. Choir students
named the the American Choir Directors Association Minnesota All-State Honor Choir include Kylee Bucher,
Christina Flaifel, Nathan Halverson, Isaiah Hang, Will Rosin, Warren Sando, Amina Scott, Butterfly Thao, and
Khanh Tran.
Jackson Middle School St. Cloud State math competition
Jackson Middle School (JMS) seventh-grade math team won the competition out of 26 schools according to
Belinda Eerdmans, teacher and team advisor. Tyler Korton won first place out of 486 students in the competi-
tion. Individual students recognized for a top five percent finish include Jake Nord, Samuel Notch, and Ben
Pullis. Top 10 percent finishers include Colin Schellenberg, Makenna Martin and Shalina Singh. JMS eighth
grade team finished in second place of 33 schools competing. Colin Stammer took second place out of 786
students. Students scoring in the top five percent include Mahalia Foster, Claire Koch, Lucas Gross, Izzy John,
Robert Weber, and Katelyn Qualley. Top 10 percent finishers Dylan Braiedy, Gabi Palm, Kaden Vinar, Nayan
Bodke, Robyn Edwards, Trinity Hanif, and Sydney Hanson.
Anoka High School DECA
Lance Wicks, activities director, recognized Madey Anfang, Bennett Lanigan and Emily Schmitz who were
awarded first place in the first place in the service plan and third place in the product plan division at the
Minnesota State DECA competition.
2018 Minnesota Promising Practice Award
Jeff McGonigal, associate superintendent for secondary schools, introduced Coon Rapids High School (CRHS)
principal Dr. Annette Ziegler and teacher Jamie Weisz. CRHS won the 2018 Promising Practice Award for their
CR/One Team and Kindness Matters campaigns held to build positive school culture throughout the year.
Coon Rapids High School Scholastic Art Awards
Suzanne Hughes, art teacher, presented CRHS students who were awarded in the 2018 Minnesota Scholastic
Arts competition, an activity that includes over 3,800 entrants statewide. Gold level awards were presented to
Ruth Salazar and Kamryn Schmeltzer. Silver level awards were presented to Alvin Lovelace, Kya Harris, Viyaleta
Korzhyk, and Andrew York.
Coon Rapids High School HOSA awardees
Dr. Annette Ziegler, principal, announced high achieving students in recent HOSA competitions, a student
organizations that promotes excellence in health services occupations. Honored students include Angela Be-
lous, first-place in HOSA Bowl, second place in dental terminology, and third place in forensic medicine, Briana
Clifton, first-place in HOSA Bowl, second place in transcultural health care, third place in forensic medicine,
behavioral health, and fourth place in health public service announcement, Valerie Christopherson, first-place
HOSA Bowl, Ruben Gubbi, first-place HOSA Bowl, Alexandra Temmerrath, second place medical innovation and
fourth place forensic medicine, Julie Vue, second place medical innovation and fourth place forensic medicine,
and Resse Uhlen and Madison Ladato who took fifth place in forensic medicine. Sena Gelato took second place
in medical innovation.
Coon Rapids High School national commended scholar
Megan Speilbauer and Alex Schmit were recognized for receiving a letter of commendation from the National
Merit Scholarship Competition. Speilbauer was also named a National Hispanic Scholar.
Coon Rapids High School National Medical Excellence Awards
Bethlehem Elias was recognized for receiving the award of excellence from the National Academy of Future
Physicians and Medical Scientists and for representing Coon Rapids High School at the state and national level
at the Congress of National Medical Leaders Congress in Boston, Massachusetts.
