DESIGN “CO-DESIGN” PROCESS
While co-design is built on user centered design but with a stronger emphasis on having
an empathic understanding of other people’s experiences, and users’ and other stakeholders’ creative contribution to design31. Although there are options of forms to conduct co-design: role play, group sketching, design games... 32etc, the design of co-design,
including structure, facilitation methods and materials has to incorporate the context and
users/stakeholder in order to assure the co-design result is beneficial.
Taking one of Craftventure’s co-design sessions for example: the user is a cheese craftsman as Craftventure’s partner. Before this co-design session, we have done research of
cheese making value chain and understood the eco system of this industry. In addition,
field research was conducted to know the place and process of making cheese. We have
designed a draft program and would like to explore how we can make this experience
unique and priceless for participants. Hence the idea is to invite, firstly, the craftsman
herself, to co-design the experience with the design team33. Given such assumption, the
co-design is framed as below:
Providing boundaries for co-design through structure, facilitation and materials in
order to creative interplay between current practice and future opportunities (Kirsikka, 2012)
• Structure: “A day of life in Zipo” - Now and Future
• To discover the unspoken experience as a cheese craftsman
• To create a future journey considering five senses
• To rethink how environment settings shall evolve to stage such experience
• Facilitation
