4 credits Full year
Studio-based, using a variety of instructional strategies
Art Studio 11 explores the guiding question“ Why do artists create?”. This course supports students in developing the confidence, skills, and insight needed to produce artwork that is personal, meaningful, and innovative. Students learn to engage in a full creative process, from exploring ideas, to experimenting with materials, to refining and completing original works.
Throughout the year, students examine the work of artists, designers, and craft-makers through both written and visual analysis. They are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests, style, and voice, and to let this guide the direction of their projects. The course is organized around theme-based projects, supported by smaller creative investigations. Students are expected to maintain a sketchbook for collecting ideas, sketches, and process notes, as well as a digital portfolio where they organize progress photos, reflections, and final artworks.
For students planning to build a portfolio for post-secondary Art & Design programs, the course can be adapted to support this goal, including technical guidance and feedback on portfolio development.
Whenever possible, learning is enriched through gallery visits, field trips, or workshops with guest artists. Assessment includes sketchbook development, written and oral presentations, and several fully resolved original artworks. Standardsbased grading is used, with ongoing formative and summative assessment throughout each project.
Big Ideas explored in this course:
• An artist’ s intention transforms materials into art.
• Visual arts reflect the interconnectedness of the individual, community, history, and society.
• Growth as an artist is dependent on perseverance, resilience, refinement, and reflection.
• Artistic expression is an artist’ s physical and cognitive articulation of our humanity.
• Artistic works offer unique aesthetic experiences in a variety of contexts.
