Students who wish to build a portfolio for postsecondary Art & Design programs will receive individualized support in creating and organizing their work, and can compliment the work they are doing in class. Assessment includes artist research, practice experimentation and revision, thoughtful documentation of process, and ongoing sketchbook development. Standardsbased grading is used, with both formative and summative assessments throughout each project.
Big Ideas explored in this Art 12 include:
• An artist’ s intention transforms materials into art.
• Visual arts are an essential element of culture and personal identity.
• Refining artistic expression requires perseverance, resilience, and risk-taking.
• Purposeful artistic choices enhance the depth and meaning of artistic work.
• Aesthetic experiences have the power to transform our perspective.

A year-long senior-level course, AP Studio Art 2D will allow students time for mastery, challenge, and discipline. The course is fueled by resilience; students will be able to recover from conceptual and physical challenges, adapt to change, and keep persevering through their selected question of inquiry. Students will develop a unified portfolio that is personal to their individual talents and interests. Students take initiative for their ideas and outcomes.
AP Studio Art 2D requires students to:( 1) conduct a sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions;( 2) skillfully synthesize materials, processes, and ideas; and( 3) articulate, in writing, information about one’ s work.
Students will build on previous studio art experiences, and will work toward achieving mastery in their technical skills, in their use of a variety of materials, and developing a personal style. The course will tap into their imagination, intuition, and conceptualization of work. Students will take an active part in describing, analyzing, interpreting, and judging their artwork and the work of their classmates, and will complete work that will be submitted for their post-secondary application. Students will demonstrate mastery through any two-dimensional medium or process. Class time is divided into five segments: Studio, Critique, Art History, Research, and Aesthetics; through those segments a portfolio will be created. Assessment will include the final submission of the AP Studio Art exam in the spring. The AP Art and Design Portfolio IS the“ Exam” and it contains two sections: The Selected Works( SW) and Sustained Investigation( SI). The Selected Works section requires students to demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas. The Sustained Investigation section requires students to conduct a sustained investigation based on an inquiry of the student’ s choosing. The work in this section should reflect ongoing practice, experimentation, and revision. Both sections of the portfolios require students to articulate information about their work; they will write about their materials, processes, and ideas.
The works presented for portfolio assessment may be produced in art classes or on the student’ s own time and may cover a period of time longer than a single school year. For this reason, CHS requires the student to be in Grade 12 in order to tap into past projects.
