Art Studio 10 asks students to explore the guiding question“ How do artists create?”. This course builds on students’ natural interests and curiosity in art, helping them expand their skills with a wide range of materials, tools, and creative processes. Students work in both 2D and 3D forms, with options that may include painting, digital drawing, ceramics, and other media. A strong focus at the beginning of the course is on‘ mark-making’, helping students build foundational technical skills while also developing a personal visual vocabulary that supports their creative intentions.
Students learn how to plan, problem-solve, and make artistic decisions as they create artworks that respond to creative challenges. Critical and reflective thinking are key parts of the process, helping students understand their choices and grow as artists. Students maintain both a sketchbook and a digital portfolio, using these tools to document ideas, track progress, and reflect on their artistic development.
Whenever possible, learning is enriched through experiences such as field trips or visits from guest artists. Assessment is standards-based and includes ongoing formative feedback as well as summative evaluations of coursework and project assignments.
Students explore the following Art 10 Big Ideas:
• Art Studio embraces the selection and combination of a broad spectrum of materials, technologies and processes for artistic expression.
• Traditions, perspectives, worldviews and stories can be shared through the visual arts.
• Growth as an artist requires time, patience, and reflection.
• The creation of visual art relies on the interplay of mind and body.
• Visual arts offer unique ways of exploring one’ s identity and sense of belonging.
