GOALS OF OUTDOOR EDUCATION AT CROFTON HOUSE SCHOOL
Outdoor Activities and Backcountry Skills
• Safely introduce students to a variety of outdoor activities and facilitate the learning of basic backcountry skills
• Create opportunities for students to step outside their comfort zone
Personal and Social Development
• Provide experiences to develop positive character traits such as self-confidence , self-reliance , leadership , collaboration , respect , responsibility and communication
Environmental Education
• Provide experiences for students to connect with the natural world
• Promote an appreciation of the natural environment and good stewardship of the earth through educational opportunities in the outdoors and the teaching of wilderness ethics
Academic Integration
• Recognize that outdoor education is part of the total learning experience and can include many subject areas ( English , social studies , science , drama , history , geography , physical education )

Outdoor instruction and experiential learning
Outdoor Education 8 is an off-campus excursion that safely introduces students to a variety of outdoor pursuits through hands-on , experiential learning . Personal leadership is explored and extends to include leadership within a group , fostering positive student relationships , strong communities , and a sense of belonging . Group activities include mountain biking , climbing , high ropes courses , hiking , group challenges , and initiatives , and a one-night camping experience where students practice basic backcountry skills . Adhering to the philosophy of ‘ challenge by choice ’, students are empowered to choose to participate in the activities for a personalized level of engagement .

Outdoor Education 9 is an off-campus excursion that builds on the variety of outdoor pursuits introduced through the Grade 8 Outdoor Education program . Students continue to explore personal leadership , group leadership , and environmental stewardship , supporting student understanding of their role within successful communities . Students will participate in a two day one night hiking trip , where they cook two backcountry meals and sleep in a tent . Group activities include camping skills , arts & crafts , campfire cooking and team initiatives . Adhering
