Canaries In The Coal Mine Where a dead canary means an unsafe atmosphere for miners, the dead fish that surfaced at the Canary Islands five years ago signaled danger from below as an underwater volcano spewed massive amounts of lava and sulphur into the water column just off the coast of El Hierro, the southwestern-most island in the Canaries. Oris is now teaming up with Spanish Institute of Oceanography to support internships and study of the newly formed underwater volcano and has issued a limited edition of 2,000 diver’s watches engraved with a profile of the mount as well as its coordinates. The Oris El Hierro specs out at 43mm of black-PVD coated steel rated to 30atm and houses the same automatic Cal 733 (Sellita SW 200-1 base) as the Oris Sixty Five. Touches of red on the bezel, dial markers and center second hand complement the otherwise all-black look. Suggested retail is $2,100. AboutTime Magazine | 53
