Every first Sunday in August you can go to Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie, to experience
music, color, and tradition, celebrating one of the most important cultural festivals in
Mexico. The word Guelaguetza means “sharing” or “mutual help,” a value that has united Oaxacan communities.
During the festival, folkloric groups perform traditional dances from the eight regions of Oaxaca, wearing traditionally colorful costumes, while the music, cuisine, and handicrafts showcase many Oaxacan customs. One of the most anticipated moments is when the
dancers share gifts that represent parts of Oaxaca, to the audience. This symbolizes
generosity and the true spirit of the Guelaguetza.
More than a performance, the Guelaguetza in Poughkeepsie is a bridge between generations. Thanks to the efforts of the Oaxacan community, young people have the opportunity to learn about their family's history, feel proud of their roots, and show that culture doesn’t disappear when borders are crossed. Every dance, every song, and every detail bring these traditions back to life, preserving them by proudly demonstrating their Oaxacan heritage.
