Artificial Intelligence at a Glance
Artificial intelligence (AI) is that part of computer science where the goal is to create
more intelligent machines. In its simplest sense the attempt is to program computers for
certain traits such as increased reaction time based on an increase in information that
allows knowledge engineering to mimic the traits of common sense, reasoning and problem-solving. This can look like a
machine being able to identify patterns and numerical logic flows and regressions to generate supposed outputs that could
mirror decision making. China in particular has been rising up the ranks of AI research and has set the goal to lead the field
by 2030 if not already. With tech companies like Baidu (a Chinese search-engine
company), Didi (Uber equivalent) and Tencent
(messaging app WeChat) a number of AI re-
search labs have been established accessing the
large volumes of data to aid AI to detect patterns.
This goes beyond just improving on facial recogni-
tion and self -driven cars but AI is also reflecting in
just about everything from social networking, mobile payment trends and even sports
and movies. And of course telling us what we should buy next.
On a global scale just a few other uses to which AI is being put to use is in Weather
forecasting, using vast amounts of data to derive predictions on weather quality and
conditions in real time. AI is also now serving as a platform to accelerate medical re-
search, prevent disease and predict potential future medical conditions of pa-
tients. The nature of man however also has lent to the development of smart weapons
as well. But beyond this the opportunities that AI brings remains endless.
