A BETTER LIFE ! ISSUE 10 | Page 5

3 ISSUE № 10 JULY 2018 The Artist Within ! I’m sure you’ve all noticed that I’m okay at illustrations, but I’m certainly no Picasso. But when a migraine strikes I believe that I can be a Kandinsky. I’m sitting at my desk at work, I begin to feel strange. Suddenly I see these lovely zig-zag colourful lines running across my vision. It’s like they are playing a game, to see which one can run across faster. My vision then goes a bit dull, almost blurry and then I realise that I’m in the midst of a migraine aura. I get a weird taste in my mouth and panic kicks in and I scramble to find my hand bag, to get my pain killers. My hand bag is an adventure on its own. You’ll find many things. Yes, the shilling oil is there, pain killers, gravol, a bottle of water, mints, my warm pashmina, olbas inhaler, a pocket dairy, pocket mirror, lipstick, shades, a pair of flat shoes, sweater, a pen and my rosary; given to me by my mom. My prayers and faith gives me strength, especially when someone says “oh you just have a headache, take an aspirin, you’ll feel better” I just smile and focus on what I need to do in order to make it through the day. Art helps me re-direct my frustration and all those other feelings I get when I’m dealing with pain, it’s become a welcome distraction. So when I’m on strong meds I try to remember what I’m experiencing so that I can draw or paint it. Who knows, they might become masterpieces (I wish!). Kandinsky was a synesthete and used his synesthesia in his paintings. He painted the music he heard. Plainly explained, it’s when one sense is activated by another, so an example would be you’re reading the black letters in this sentence, but when a synesthete reads sentences, they see each letter as a color (letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored). Isn’t that just amazing ! Imagine, since my sense of smell and hearing are amplified when I have a migraine, what amazing artwork I could paint if I were a synesthete. But given the “la la” land mode I go into when on strong painkillers, I don’t think I could keep my eyes opened long enough to paint a work of art. Pain management is important when dealing with severe/chronic migraines. Finding something that helps dull the pain or even distract from it, is crucial in chasing the blues away. I love re-cycling and painting on bottles and I even make hand painted jewelry.
