• DDS : DDS is a Doctor of Dental Surgery . This is the terminal degree in the study of dentistry . Every dentist in the US needs to complete this level of study to be licensed to practice .
• DMD : DMD is a Doctor of Dental Medicine . Both , DDS and DMD , refer to the degree awarded upon graduation from dental school . Both degrees have the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Association ’ s Commission on Dental Accreditation .
• DPM : DPM is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine , a specialist in the prevention , diagnosis , diseases , injuries , and treatment of lower extremity disorders , mainly feet , and ankles .
If a provider completes their residency and decides to subspecialize , that ’ s called a fellowship . A fellowship is a program that provides advanced education and training in progressive levels of sub specialization following completion of education and training in a primary specialty and , if applicable , a related subspecialty . It is a structured educational activity comprising a series of clinical and / or other learning experiences designed to prepare providers to enter the unsupervised practice of medicine in a subspecialty or sub-subspecialty .
During this time ( usually more than one year ), the provider is known as a fellow . A fellow is an individual enrolled in an accredited fellowship program . Fellows are capable of acting as an attending provider or a consultant provider in the specialist field in which
