In this chapter , we ’ ll explore the journey providers must complete before they can apply for privileges .
How Providers Come to Be
There are years of training that must occur prior to someone becoming a provider . Once an individual completes pre-medical education and graduates from medical school , they apply for acceptance to a residency program in a selected specialty , and depending on the specialty , the residency program may take anywhere from three to seven years to complete .
Providers Can Train to be Certain Types of Doctors , Including the Following :
• MD : MD is an allopathic provider , a system of medical practice that emphasizes diagnosing and treating disease and the use of conventional , evidence-based therapeutic measures ( such as drugs or surgery ).
• DO : DO is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine , a system of medical practice that emphasizes a holistic and comprehensive approach to patient care and utilizes the manipulation of musculoskeletal tissues along with other therapeutic measures ( such as the use of drugs or surgery ) to prevent and treat disease
