Case Study 5: Understanding Talent – The Crucial Role of Mindset in Maximising Athlete Potential Case Study 6: A Curious Case of Curious Coaches – The FA Club Coach Mentoring Programme Speaker: Tony Stanger (sportscotland institute of sport) Speaker: Graham Keeley (The FA) Why do some athletes who were amazing juniors never make it at senior level? And why do some athletes who had limited success when they were young go on to have amazing careers? This session is designed for coaches who want to know more about why this can happen and how they can use a better understanding of talent and the role of mindset to help young athletes reach their potential. The session will look at the FA’s pilot grass-roots mentoring programme – its aims, how it was rolled out and the key findings to inform the national roll-out. Tony Stanger will share the work of the sportscotland institute of sport with coaches, parents, athletes and governing bodies, and some tools to help improve delegates’ coaching. More specifically, the session will show how delegates can use a robust definition of talent to create environments designed to give athletes the best chance of success. Learning outcomes By the end of the session, you will have: •  developed an understanding of the scientific background to this approach • learnt where/how you can find out more • shared some tools you can use in practice. It will cover: • key areas of work for mentors • how learning walks have been used • the art of noticing •  how coaches within the programme have become more curious, leading to more independent learning • the programme’s impact on match-day behaviours. It will also consider key aims for future developments and outline the work done with sports coach UK in developing the programme and resources.
