Case Studies
Speakers: Vicky Sutton (Welsh Sports Association),
Dr Brendan Cropley (Welsh Football Trust)
and Melanie Tuckwell (University of South Wales)
Mentoring is central to the development of coaching in Wales.
This session explores the lessons from two successful mentoring
schemes that have been running for several years. The Gwent
Project has seen five local authorities come together to train
and deploy mentors in more than 40 sports clubs. Under the
direction of a full-time coordinator, the Welsh Football Trust
programme now has more than 70 mentors working with over
800 coaches, impacting on over 10,000 young Welsh footballers.
Delegates will learn how mentoring programmes with strong
partnerships can be developed at both local and national
level, and be able to apply the principles to their own
mentoring provision.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the session, you will:
•
understand the progress of two established mentoring
schemes in Wales
•
have applied this knowledge to challenge your own
mentoring provision
• understand mentoring at a local and national level
•
have identified key partners to support your mentoring
preparation.
Learning Lounge
We’re trying something new at this year’s Summit in order
to provide another means of sharing ideas, developments
and good practice. While you’re digesting your Crowne Plaza
lunch, you’re invited to hear the latest on a wide range of
topics in our Learning Lounge area.
This gives us all the chance to learn about projects or
developments that may be of interest, but might not yet
justify a full Summit session. The Learning Lounge will be
run using a market-stall approach; Jill Douglas will explain
the details on the day.
As this is a new venture for the Summit, we’d really value
your feedback on how effective and valuable it is.
Home Country Updates
As at previous UK Coaching Summits, we’re providing
the opportunity for you to learn more about coaching
developments in your own country. These briefing sessions
will be led by staff from your Home Country Sports Council.
Scottish delegates are welcome to attend any of these
sessions, as they wish. Locations and an outline of content
will be advised on the day. In particular, the Sport England
session will focus on the vital need to coordinate action to
achieve our common goals and explore how, through the
new England Coaching Plan and Talent Strategy, we can work
together to deliver excellent sporting experiences, creating
lifelong sporting habits.
