Course Name: Ceramics I Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 9th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: VA Comprehensive I( 80 %+)
Description: This course introduces the characteristics of clay and design in clay using various techniques of construction and decoration. Emphasizes hand building and introduces other forming techniques, surface decoration, and glaze applications. Covers styles of ceramic works from Western and non-Western cultures.
Course Name: Ceramics II Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Ceramics I( 80 %+)
Description: This course enhances level-one skills and provides opportunities to apply design techniques in clay through hand building and / or throwing on the potter ' s wheel. Introduces formulation of basic glazes and kiln firing and stresses evaluation of clay forms through art criticism.
Course Name: Painting I Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Draw / Paint II( 80 %+)
Description: This course explores a variety of techniques and wide range of painting media. Emphasizes developing basic painting and critical analysis skills for responding to master paintings. Examples solutions to painting problems through the study of color theory and composition. Emphasizes the concept and development of personal styles. Students take in the Fall Semester and pair with AP 2-D Art and Design in the Spring.
Course Name: AP 2-D Art and Design Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 11th and 12th grade Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation AND Fall art course must be taken
Description: This is an introductory college-level two-dimensional design course. Students refine and apply 2- D skills to ideas they develop throughout the course. Students will develop skills in a two-dimensional medium such as graphic design, photography, collage, printmaking, and others as they learn the principles of 2-D design and will create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. The student’ s portfolio will serve as the AP“ exam” for this course. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
